BASIC TIPS FOR VISITORS & PMV TRAVELLERS
      secure valuables in hotel deposit box & carry minimal possessions on person
     carry bottled water & do not drink or eat food sold at roadsides
     if catching PMV's, be early to secure seat.
     do not walk around after dark
     have small change ready to pay for all expenses
     dress appropriately & conservatively.  Be also well protected from the sun & have comfortable, traction  gripping footwear for walking   

Health Notes for travellers : 

The lack of malaria transmission in the urban centres and the socio-economic background of the major health problems makes EHP a very safe area to visit from a health context. As with the rest of PNG, vaccination against Hepatitis A and B is recommended and periodic outbreaks of typhoid make typhoid vaccine wise. Malaria prophylaxis is not necessary for travellers coming through Port Moresby to stay in Goroka, though if any fever arises within a few weeks of visiting your doctor should exclude the rare possibility of malaria. If you are planning to visit remote rural areas or combine the visit with a trip to the coast, see your travel physician for recommendations on anti-malarial prophylaxis.

Goroka to Lae (4hrs):    catch bus at main market or west bus stop.  Listen for the Lae call.  Approximate departure times are in the morning.  Bus fare is K20.00

Goroka to Madang (6hrs):    catch bus at main market or west bus stop.  Listen for the Madang call or just ask the bus driver.  Approx departure times 0730 - 0830 hrs.  Bus fare is K30.00

Goroka to Mt Hagen (4hrs):    catch bus at main market.  Listen for the Hagen call or ask the driver.  Approx departure times are in the morning.  Bus fare is K20.00 

Goroka to Kainantu (1hr 30 mins):    Catch bus at main market or West Bus Stop. Listen for Kainantu call. Buses travel throughout the day. Bus fare is K6.00.

It is safer and convenient to travel in the mornings especially if you are traveling longer distances.
